Five Ways to Brainstorm Relevant Blog Titles

If you’ve been blogging for a while, you may find yourself reusing the titles, or using titles that are very, very similar. Your title depends on your content, and there’s nothing more frustrating than running out of inspiration. There are a number of tricks to help job your creative thinking, and a lot of them are surprisingly hands-on. To find fresh new titles, you need to step away from the word processor and try something different.

Check Out the Competition

Copying someone else’s work is never okay, but reading up on your area of expertise keeps you informed. If there are trending issues in the community to write about, new tech that’s just been released, etc., the best place to see if you’re missing out is on the competitions’ blogs. Again, you shouldn’t plagiarize them, but they can give you a new idea to pursue.

Walk the Talk

When was the last time you actually practiced what you preach? If you need new ideas about woodworking, maybe it’s time to brush up on your carpentry skills. If you write about the novel market, you should have a few conversations with your best contacts. Every topic requires a slightly different approach, but the principle remains the same.

Ask Questions

Take some time for yourself and consider what you thought about when you first started learning about your chosen topic. Did you have questions about a specific technique? What do you know now that you wish you knew then? Even if they don’t immediately spring to mind, you probably still have questions now. Is there a new product you’ve considered, but haven’t tried? What habits do you practice that could help others?

Consider Past, Present, and Future

This trick doesn’t work for all blogs. However, if possible, look beyond current issues. If you write about farming laws, use a blog post to explain the inception of government agricultural subsidizing. Look for important historical events or the origins that led to current developments or problems. Developing cases are still important, but feel free to theorize a bit on what the future may hold, especially if those theories are based on historical patterns.

Try a New Article Style

If you usually write DIY articles, change things up with an interview. Bringing in other voices is a great way to boost interest and increase the intellectual value of your blog. Product reports are also a wonderful way to attract new readers and answer the kinds of questions people most frequently type into Google. Listicles, articles that uses lists to convey the main thought or idea, are currently trending, and they’re relatively easy to make. Most importantly, diversifying your content without deviating from your target audience is easiest when you focus on form over the material.

Inspiration doesn’t come like a lightning strike, unfortunately, but it can come through a bit of research, discussion, or simply by taking a broader view of time. Not every trick works for every blog or blogger. However, many blogging professionals use these tactics regularly to keep the work moving. Have you tried any of these before?
